Each time I promise myself to write the editor's column in advance: I dream, like pouring coffee, sit in silence, pensively look into the distance and hear the right words inside.

But instead, I finish writing the appeal again just before the deadline, "on the flag", when (literally!) A three-year-old son hangs around his neck. Robots are howling around, mechanical pianos are singing songs, messengers are insistently banging inbound, shouting notifications that they cannot be ignored. But here's what's strange: in the midst of all this chaos, it's easier for me to concentrate and catch the right thoughts. Okay, perhaps for the first time in my life I am ready to admit to you (and to myself): I often provoke such conditions myself, because in the case when there is nowhere to retreat, as if I open some kind of internal reserves. In stressful conditions, ideas pour out of me like sugar from a torn bag: an unstoppable stream. Just have time to substitute your palms.

I am sure that you are familiar with this experience: you endlessly postpone a task to which you do not understand how to approach, but when there is nowhere to pull - once, and you get access to a secret storage, which is provided for such an extreme case. However, this is approximately how it works.

I learned about the term eustress a couple of weeks ago, but I have experienced its effect all my life: when I was learning a theorem at recess before an algebra lesson, I wrote a term paper and an important article “from wheels” to the issue during the night. Eustress is about a positive reaction to stress factors, when they act as stimulants, and as a result - not depression and apathy, but satisfaction and general recovery. The same feeling when, after a tense jerk, you finally passed the project or ran the first marathon and are terribly proud of yourself.

After reading about this concept, I realized: this is the perfect topic for this month! Because if this whole story with the coronavirus and the general global crisis is not stress, then what is stress in general?

It would seem: everyone should hide. But where opportunities for large companies were closed, niches and windows suddenly opened for dozens of start-ups. Those who kept their nose to the wind caught a fresh stream of air and introduced timely ideas into the crisis.

But eustress is not only about brain function and stimulus to action. It works much broader: training, especially new types of load, is also a shake-up for the body. We see how both our body and mood change in response to unusual exercises. And this is the work of positive stress. These features of the body are used in cosmetology and skin care, in dietetics.

It turned out that stress is different, that it is quite possible to tame it and make it work for you. There is, however, one "but": this still needs to be learned. This is what we propose to do in the next month.
