Space psychologist Anna Yusupova studied research that was carried out at space stations and polar winter quarters. Anna is convinced that the experience of astronauts and polar explorers is the key to understanding what we are experiencing now. She recently hosted a webinar for the Institute of Continuing Professional Education for Social Workers, where she explained how to use this specific experience in home isolation. A person in orbit or in the Far North is constantly in danger. We are not in space or at a polar station, nevertheless, we feel threatened. And the natural human response to danger is fight or flight. We cannot do either one or the other. As a result, stress does not find a way out and accumulates in the body.

What to do? Treat the situation like a game. This will help lift your spirits and relieve internal stress.

By the way, the cosmonauts have a tradition to watch the film "White Sun of the Desert" before the flight. His heroes also risk their lives, however, they treat their position calmly and even ironically. Perhaps it is worth revising it now?

Multiple increase in load

In our case, this primarily applies to families with children. Now my mother is forced to simultaneously work, housekeeping, and take care of children. Quite like an astronaut who has a scheduled every day.

If time permits, think about needlework. This is not only pleasant, but also extremely useful. Exercises involving fine motor skills have been shown to support brain function and even prevent the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Irrational organization of the daily routine

In space flight, a violation of the work and rest regime leads to a decrease in the crew's efficiency. In our situation, the daily routine is also the basis of well-being.

What to do? Your daily routine should look like this:

  • sleep +/- 8 hours (depending on the individual norm);
  • work no more than 8.5 hours (and we don't stick to social networks!);
  • food 3-4 times a day (taking into account individual characteristics);
  • no night vigils;
  • yes - physical education.
  • And don't forget the weekend!

Publicity

Astronauts in orbit are constantly in the focus of attention of ground services. By their own admission, this increases emotional stress. Unlike astronauts, we may well avoid publicity. To do this, it is enough not to flaunt your life on social networks.

Practice “digital hygiene”, do not report on Facebook every day. The world will not collapse from this, and there will be more time for something more productive.

Is it easy to learn from the experience of astronauts? After all, they have been preparing for flights for years and know what they are doing. And we are completely unprepared for the current situation. This is, of course, true. But the conditions in which we find ourselves cannot be compared with space, so we have every chance to survive isolation without loss and even with benefit for ourselves.
