When to start using toothpaste and how to choose it?

You need to start using toothpaste from the moment the first tooth appears. I often hear that the forums are advised to use water or other available means for cleansing. Don't do it - we don't live in the Stone Age. Choose age-appropriate toothpastes and brushes - everything is labeled.

Pay attention to the stiffness of the bristles and the size of the toothbrush head. I love the Swiss brand Curaprox brushes. For the little ones, choose the Curakid model. Many mothers ask how children should brush their teeth with an electric brush. I talked about this in more detail here.

In addition to minerals, pastes must contain abrasive particles - they are cleaned of plaque. If they are not there, we will not achieve the main goal. Unlike adult toothpastes, children's abrasive particles are softer and more delicate.

Manufacturers often use calcium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate as an abrasive. They should not be in children's pastes - they are too aggressive, they can damage the enamel.

Analogs of these abrasives: titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide - look for them on packages with children's toothpaste.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a harmful ingredient. It is used to give the composition foaming properties. SLS is found in almost all adult toothpastes. It should not be in children - it is toxic to the delicate mucous membrane, it can dry out and cause allergic reactions. In fairness, many brands don't use sodium lauryl sulfate, but there are still some who still add it.

Triclosan, metronidazole, chlorhexidine are found in some teens toothpastes. They are indicated for gingivitis and the presence of inflammatory processes. Sold in the public domain. But such pastes should be prescribed by a doctor - they are not preventive, but therapeutic! To use them, you need evidence. Treatment should take place in courses. If pastes with triclosan, metronidazole or chlorhexidine in the composition are used constantly, this can lead to dysbiosis, a violation of the microbiological balance of the oral cavity.

If a child lives in an area where the level of fluoride in tap water is normal or below normal, there are first signs of caries, or the teeth are poorly mineralized (this can be found out on examination), I recommend fluoride pastes. If the level of fluoride in the water exceeds the norm, then it is better to refuse fluorine-containing pastes for up to 5 years. Japanese Pigeon are the best fluoride pastes.

Many mothers are afraid that at an early age, the child swallows pasta. There is nothing wrong with that. A pea-sized amount of pasta is acceptable. The kid will definitely learn to spit it out in 2-3 years.

Before moving on to the main question “how to brush your teeth correctly,” a reminder for the children of their parents: an adult must brush his child's teeth himself until school age. Mom and Dad can show by their example that brushing their teeth is beneficial and encourage their child to try to do it on their own. But you shouldn't completely trust him with the process.

How to teach a child to brush their teeth correctly?

You cannot brush your teeth using horizontal movements (this technique is often shown in advertisements). This will wear off the enamel and leave a residue. It is necessary to make sweeping movements, cleaning the teeth from all sides, including the chewing surface. You can more clearly see how to brush your teeth correctly in the video that I specially shot for children and parents.

How often should you visit the dentist?

When four milk teeth appear, feel free to go to the dentist. Up to three years, it is better to see a doctor once every 3-4 months, later it can be reduced to once every six months. If a child has dental problems, there are cavities, then, of course, the doctor needs to appear more often.

Mom should work on herself so as not to transmit fears to the child. The sentences “We’ll go to the dentist now, but don’t be afraid”, “You will not be in pain” (and 13 more phrases that cannot be said to the baby) are prohibited! The child is not yet familiar with the dentist, but is already afraid of him. No need to promise expensive gifts after visiting a doctor. The child will be on the alert, anticipating that something unpleasant awaits him (read more about children's anxieties here). The visit should become a habitual event. Talk to your child more, explain what the dentist does, how to brush your teeth correctly. Cartoons for children and applications on this topic - to help!

Also, do professional oral hygiene, after which the teeth are covered with fluoride varnishes. There is no age limit. If the child is 1.5 years old and he does not allow his mother to brush her teeth well, go to a specialist.
