We analyze what are the prospects for our film in the international competition.
Last week it became known that the Russian Oscar committee nominated the film of Kantemir Balagov for the award. It should be noted right away that this promotion does not mean anything yet. "Dylda" proposed to the American Academy for consideration. She will only announce the long list of nominees in a few months, and then the final list, from which the winner will be selected. But despite the uncertainty, nothing prevents us from rejoicing that this movie has such an opportunity. Moreover, he has every chance, if not to win (let's not think so far), but at least to get into the final nominees. And that's why.
The film is set in post-war Leningrad, on its streets, in its communal apartments. The military theme is special for us. On the one hand, it seems that everything about her has already been filmed, on the other - every time we take a new statement to heart. There are people alive who saw it with their own eyes. The memory is alive.
A story that everyone can understand
The plot of "Dyldy" is centered on relationships between people. Constrained by external circumstances, the heroines experience the whole range of emotions. Love of mother and child, friendship, support of colleagues, social inequality, manipulation of feelings. The 27-year-old director turns the situation in such a way that the viewer begins to empathize with the heroine, not because she lost something during the war, but because she has something to lose now. On the one hand, it is a duty to my best and only friend, on the other, the betrayal of a colleague, from whom I saw nothing but good … A situation in which no one wants to be, but you cannot tear yourself away from watching her. Every moment of the film presents the girls with a choice. Just as life puts us.
By the way, color plays an important role in the picture. According to the director, it was important for him that the characters looked dignified and noble, did not cause pity - and he emphasized this, including with the help of color accents.
The plot touches on social topics, the controversy around which does not subside today: euthanasia, abortion, women's rights. Although Balagov himself notes that his story is about the fact that "a man needs a man", not "a woman needs a woman." But this is what is being discussed now. And that only a woman can understand a woman. And that she can be happy with any of her own choices, which does not necessarily have to include marriage with a man. After all, in the film, all male characters are of the second plan, and this also reflects the trends of the time.
Participation in international festivals
From the point of view of formality, the main condition for getting into the Oscar nominees is screenings in American cinemas. The Dylda rental in the USA is scheduled for early 2020, so everything is observed here. In addition, the film received awards at the Cannes Film Festival, participated in film screenings in Toronto, San Sebastian, Telluride and many other international programs. It is important.
Now all that remains is to be patient. The final nominees will be officially announced on January 13, 2020. The Oscar ceremony itself will take place on February 9, 2020.
