The BeautyHack editors asked film critic Oksana Trukhan to understand the phenomenon of the popularity of Quentin Tarantino's latest film. Why is there so much buzz around the director's ninth work?

It's true, amazing. Quentin Tarantino does not shoot "Titanics" and "Avatars", his works are more likely for moviegoers than for the general audience (although I am sure that the author himself would not agree with my words). So how did it happen that Once Upon a Time in … Hollywood "over the first weekend became the leader of the box office and earned a record amount for pictures of this genre?

Surely, if you yourself have not yet watched this movie, you have a friend who definitely watched it. Opinions around me were divided into two camps: "I liked it very much" and "what a bore". And no, there is a third one: "I liked the last 15 minutes very much." The film really does not have the classic "plot-climax-denouement" scheme. We just watch the life of 70s Hollywood stars for two and a half hours. And behind the life of fictional stars: actor Rick Dalton and his stunt double Cliff Booth, who are surrounded by many real celebrities: Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski, Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen. By the way, it was funny to watch the reaction of the audience at the Russian premiere, where a lot of celebrities were present. Judging by the laughter from Rick and Cliff's lines, the actors' problems haven't changed much since then. For example, they are still sick of those roleswhich are imposed on them, but they do not have enough spirit to refuse them. However, is this only about the actors?.. Looking at Rick, the hero of DiCaprio, you rejoice in yourself that the weakness is inherent in successful people as well.

Here it is worth moving on to the first reason for the success of "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" - an acting duet of Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. This is the first collaboration between two of Hollywood's most handsome men, and the chemistry of the duo is mesmerizing. True, the next question immediately arises: who deserves an Oscar more: Brad or Leo

Are you for Brad? I'm with you! First, his character Cliff is much nicer than Rick. He is a loyal friend, fights great, eats deliciously (for Pitt, you can organize a separate award in the food category - he does it so charmingly in all his films). Yes, Cliff's career is in the past, but he clearly knows what he wants: to help a friend, get paid, feed the dog, not end up in jail.

Do you think Leo should be lucky? No objections. After all, the image of Rick comes out much more voluminous than Cliff. His self-doubts, constant tears, and their brilliant scene with a girl actress! And in this image, DiCaprio again does not look like himself, reincarnation happened again.

What about Margot Robbie? Her silent sweet heroine attracted less enthusiastic responses. But judging by the reviews of Sharon Tate's contemporaries, she was just that: sweet, benevolent, loved by everyone. And her brutal murder by Manson in her ninth month of pregnancy at one time for the Americans was a tragedy similar in emotions to the death of Princess Diana for the British. Therefore, the 15-minute final scene will appeal to both those who are familiar with the history and those who simply appreciate Tarantino's handwriting. Although he himself does not believe that he has gone too far with violence, claiming that he has no pity for Charles Manson and his partners, and in the finale they get what they deserve.

And this is the main thing that clings. No wonder the original title of the film includes the expression "Once upon a time …", and this is how all classic fairy tales begin. Like ours "In a certain kingdom, in a certain state …". The director rewrites history, puts real characters in unrealistic circumstances. Where good triumphs over evil, bad heroes are brutally punished, and 55-year-old Brad Pitt has a breathtaking body. However, the latter fact is no longer a fairy tale.
