House at the End of the Night by Katherine Banner
Selected by BeautyHack co-founder Ekaterina Domankova
This is a family saga, the narrative of which covers the period from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day (already interesting!). A story about family, human relationships, friendship and, of course, love. The entire action of the book takes place on the small Italian island of Castellammare, whose inhabitants from generation to generation are born, live and die here, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, on a land shrouded in a thick haze. "House at the End of the Night" does not have a dynamic storytelling, it will not make you nervous or much worried, but it will completely captivate you with its pleasant pacification.
How to read: on the seashore, under a blanket by the fire or in any other cozy atmosphere. Pleasant aftertaste guaranteed
"Unique Specimen" by Tom Hanks
Ana Lipartia's BeautyHack Editor's Choice
Love for typewriters in the 21st century, collecting them all over the world, careful restoration, and even an incredible collection written on these typewriters - definitely worthy of attention. Well, if we really mention that the author is none other than Tom Hanks, then this story becomes more interesting and unexpected. It was an absolute discovery for me that my favorite actor has such an unexpected hobby. But even more I was amazed by the "Unique copy" itself.
The book was made with great love, you can feel it right away. Filled with American identity. It's amazing, but Tom Hanks has an amazing ability to take the reader into the world of his imagination, and besides, feel an overwhelming nostalgia for times that never happened in your life, yearn for things that you never possessed, and reminisce about childhood. which did not belong to you.
I liked one small detail in the book incredibly. Before each story begins, there is a picture of the typewriter on which it was typed. Some of them are so mesmerizing that one involuntarily wants to run and quickly buy one such copy.
I really hope that this pleasant, at least for me, surprise in the form of "Tom Hanks Writes Books" will be continued. These are light, poignant, fantastic and unique stories that are capable and should enter the life of each of us.
How to read: Sitting in a comfortable chair (alone). You can hug your favorite pet
“Dear editors. The true story of "Lenta.Ru", told by its creators "
BeautyHack Editor's Choice Sofia Vorobyova
This is a book-memory or a book-farewell, a collection of personal, touching stories, completely different in style. Such a story is about a freelance journalist, a developing tape that has grown on the Internet. She was driven by the spirit of adventurism, the search for something new, she was wrong and could not dream only of a tailwind.
On the pages of the book, you will read many stories from the lives of journalists, editors and founders of Lenta.Ru, some will be funny, some serious, you will not do without sad ones either.
The stories will denounce the entire editorial office of the media, which was filled with fantastically inflexible journalists at a time when the profession was in crisis, when a journalist became a PR man, advertiser, propagandist.
Now, such media as "Lenta.ru" are not enough for people with a broad outlook, they want to find, read and support such news sites as soon as possible.
This book inspires drive, especially for journalists who may have lost heart in their business. It revives optimism in the reader, a desire to work, come up with new ideas and move forward. When you read the foreword by Yuri Saprykin, you will understand what I mean.
How to read: dosed - no more than one chapter before bed
"Distant Close", Ilya Repin
Editor's Choice BeautyHack Kristina Semina
The autobiography of the famous Russian artist, whose exhibition is now taking place in the Tretyakov Gallery, is easy to read. The book is divided into four chapters, and in each one you can find not only interesting facts about Ilya Repin, but also his philosophical thoughts about life (by the way, some are quite applicable in our time!), As well as a description of the culture and life of that time.
In the first part, the author talks about his childhood and the formation of his creative path. It is especially interesting to observe how his thoughts about painting changed and how many difficulties he had to go through before becoming a great artist. At this moment, any reader, it seems to me, can at least for a short while believe in fate or that any talent will definitely find its recognition.
In the second and third parts, Repin writes about his friendship and acquaintance with no less famous artists. And in the fourth - a detailed description of the creation of his most famous work "Barge Haulers on the Volga".
How to read: on the veranda of a cafe in a quiet park, always with linden tea and delicious cookies
"Radical Forgiveness: Make Space for Miracles," Colin Tipping
The choice of beauty director BeautyHack Vasilisa Kakorina
"Therefore, every new opportunity to see your problem and get rid of it is a gift!" - Writes Colin Tipping, author of Radical Forgiveness.
The author claims that each of us bears traces of resentment from all the events of life. Any person has the archetype of a victim, and no matter how strong he may seem to others and to himself, from childhood memories of the injustice of others are preserved. Tipping invites the reader to take specific steps to improve their lives and build relationships.
The book helps to redefine the past and present, and shows that true forgiveness is easily achieved and occurs instantly. By abandoning the role of a victim, the level of vital vibrations rises, and the emotional burden of the past is released and forgotten.
As a result, according to the author's thought, acquiring the skill of "Radical Forgiveness" you become happier, stronger and freer.
How to read: thoughtfully, without being distracted by others and returning to previous chapters
" Castle of Glass ", Jeannette Walls
Choice of the editor-in-chief of BeautyHack Natalia Pikus
Probably, if I were not a mother, I would have read this book with a slight feeling of surprise, put it off and forget about this story. But parenting, with its constant doubts whether you are doing everything right, how important it is to carefully handle the child's psyche from childhood, makes you greedily swallow any experience from this area.
And the experience described in this autobiographical book is very ambiguous.
Jannet's parents thought more about their desires and dreams than about how to feed their children. But poverty is not the most important test the author of the book has passed. Spoilers are hard to do without, but I'll tell you this: the story is about how far the generally accepted standards are from reality. How events occurring with little characters and seemingly terrible horror surprisingly transforms children's brains and uses them for good. Like hunger, homelessness, and family violence do not embitter. Definitely readable.
By the way, the book was filmed, the film is very much praised. But honestly, I can't muster the courage to watch it.
How to read: voraciously, periodically being distracted to quote especially strong moments to a husband or girlfriend who happened to be nearby
