As soon as Gigi Hadid came out with a cover that read "Social Media Seriously Harms Your Mental Health", all offline and online stores were filled with stickers, T-shirts, stickers and, of course, covers with this flashy phrase. This hype was nothing more than a short trend. But … "social media seriously harms your mental health" - think about this phrase. Everything is much more serious than it seems. BeautyHack trainee Kamila Alkhanova experienced the power of pressure from ideal pictures from Instagram: at the age of 16, she compared her face with those that she saw in ideal profiles - and found inconsistencies. Since then, she has become a regular client of the cosmetologist. It took her four years to accept herself. Below is a first-person story.

Plump lips gave me confidence

2016 - the beginning of building the empire of Kylie Jenner. Enlarged lips, breasts, and a wide variety of other surgical procedures.

"What are my thin and ugly lips!" - I thought sixteen. My mother has always been “for” getting rid of complexes, therefore, realizing that it is really important, she took me to her trusted beautician. Have I thought about the pain or some negative consequences? The obvious answer is no. My brain was occupied by complexes and the belief that without voluminous lips I look just monstrous.

After a twenty-minute procedure, they gave me a mirror in my hands, and I couldn't get enough of myself. I wanted to be photographed all the time, although I practically have no “before” photos. In agony, I stopped looking for lip pencils to match the color of my pigment: before I could not leave the house without makeup and always painted my lips so that they seemed larger. I began to confidently look people in the face, talking to them, because I no longer had to worry that they would notice my flaw. And yes, with the boys, too, everything went easier.

Plump lips added confidence to me, and from the age of eighteen, when I already had every right to visit a beautician without my mother's accompaniment, other injection procedures were also used. Each time I found new flaws in myself, which I recently considered as advantages. The dimple on her chin, which she considered a highlight, suddenly began to constantly catch my eye in the mirror. The hump on the nose, barely noticeable, suddenly became a problem that prevented us from living happily. And there are many, many such little things that my first cosmetologist willingly noticed every time.

For four years, I have never allowed the hyaluronic acid in my lips to dissolve. As soon as they lost a little in volume, I ran to the beautician again.

I do not know how it would have ended if I had not got a job at the reception of the clinic of cosmetology and plastic surgery. And there I seemed to see myself from the outside: in hundreds of girls with a total rejection of myself and my body.

The problems that they thought up for themselves reached the point of absurdity. They dreamed of removing the folds on the knees, visible only to them, they often asked to write to the beautician not for something specific, but "for something, I don't know, let him look." And there are 2-3 such applications per day. There was a hypnologist-psychotherapist in our clinic. The doctor sent patients to him, who clearly could no longer adequately assess their appearance. But not all reached.

You can try to convince yourself a million times that Instagram and other social networks have no effect, but I just had to see it from the outside. At the age of 20, I finally removed hyaluronic acid from my lips.

I removed the hyaluron to … upload it again

The head doctor of our clinic could not resist: she noticed that due to an excess of hyaluronic acid began to migrate outside the lip contour. How did I feel when I saw my original data in the mirror again? Desire to urgently correct them. Alas. Only dad was delighted: he said that at last he was facing a child again, and not a femme fatale. But after some time I again came to a beautician: only already proven and professional. She made the contour clearer and added the necessary minimum of preparation to make the lips look as natural as possible. Now I am absolutely happy with the result, but I cannot help but think about how the promotion of beauty standards works and how important the ideas of body positive are. They are not about justifying laziness at all, they are about the freedom to choose to follow fashion or not to follow it. About, that it is important to feel and act solely in their own interests. I hope I am moving in this direction.

Doctor's comment

We asked a specialist why so many girls are trying to change their appearance when there is a trend towards natural beauty all over the world.

Victoria Ambartsumyan, plastic surgeon, cosmetologist, teacher in the areas of injection techniques and contour plastic:

- Such a massive desire to improve something in itself is rather typical for our country and is associated with several factors. Firstly, in Russia, they began to produce worthy analogues of drugs, injections became available to a wide range of people, there was a great temptation from both doctors and clients. The further, the more there are ways to "improve" their appearance, which is what all patients are chasing. Secondly, the psychological factor. When a person is not satisfied with his social status, does not have an adequate view that he is primarily a person, is too lazy to develop and talk to himself, he just goes and adds "more, more, a little more." Thinking that it will help you get better.

And a psychologist

Tatiana Ogneva-Salvoni, practicing psychologist:

- When it comes to light interference with your appearance against the background of puberty, then this is understandable. A person from a child is rapidly turning into an adult, which is accompanied by a huge number of fears of inappropriateness, fears of being rejected by this society, the desire for acceptance and the desire to establish themselves in this new adult world. At 15-16 years old, girls practice makeup to look older. It is then that after 20 years they will want to look younger, and at the beginning they really, really want to finish this transition period into adulthood. And here, if there is a possibility, it is almost impossible to resist the temptation to improve something in yourself.

It's another matter when it becomes a fix idea. Surgical intervention in one's appearance in an obsessive form in psychotherapy is considered as a form of auto-aggression and a certain psychological disorder. And then it's not about beauty at all. What is the reason? The extremes in the external environment can be easily found - social networks, catwalk standards, Hollywood, or even sloppy commentary. But before there were no social networks, and some common beauty standards still existed. The frustration does not arise from this. If a girl grew up in the midst of depreciation and constant shame, it is enough for mom or dad to be very critical. There may be deeper injuries. Oddly, if the desire for perfection takes on an obsessive form, it is necessary with the help of a psychologist to look for the true reason for the desire to remake oneself.
