Our freelance writer Marina Syutaeva did blepharoplasty and tells how it was (spoiler: not scary at all).

“Smeared again! I'm tired of it! " - At the age of 27, I stopped drawing arrows in front of my eyes, because they lived there for two minutes, no more. Something bad happened to my upper eyelids. At some point, the skin on each eyelid became too much, and it gathered into an additional fold, which, firstly, hung ugly over the eye, adding to my age; and secondly, it instantly turned into blots even the most persistent shadows, pencil, liquid eyeliner - whatever. Both of these circumstances annoyed me unrealistically, but the realization that nothing could be done about it was even more angry. Except for plastic surgery, of course. Then I was not ready for blepharoplasty for many reasons. For example, it seemed to me that this is a method of despair, which is used exclusively by women aged 50+. But I'm still wow! Plus I was scared.I'm scared to hell of injections, drills, and even taking blood from a finger - but I'm generally silent about a surgical scalpel. So for several years I watched with horror in the mirror as the eyelid was hanging more and more, I was upset, but … I did nothing.

Everything changed last summer. I needed a photo to apply for a visa. I quickly drove to a photo studio, took a photo and asked to send it to me by mail. I opened the file and was horrified. From the picture a sad, tired woman was looking at me. And most importantly, this woman was old. Mom, is it me or what? In my “well over thirty” I should look a lot better. I smiled ingratiatingly at the reflection in the mirror - it didn't help, the picture is the same. Then I realized that it was time to act. The fear of looking terrible overpowered the fear of the scalpel.

My extra fold of skin in the upper eyelid is a "merit" of genetics. The eyelids of my mother and grandmother look exactly the same. The second thing that I was not lucky to get from them by inheritance is dark circles and dips under the eyes, a real panda look. No anti-circles creams work, they have been tested many times. It is also impossible to cover it with concealer: after half an hour there is no trace of it.

In general, I gave up and went to my "on duty" clinic "Time of Beauty". It was there that several years ago they proved to me in word and deed that Botox injections are not horror-horror, painful sensations are minimal, and hateful wrinkles have no chance. By the way, I hate grandiloquent phrases like “my wrinkles are the chronicle of my wonderful life”. Personally, I don't need any wrinkles, and in general I find it silly to put up with the flaws that I don't like. In short, you have to cut!

Exactly a week passed between the day of the fateful decision and the day of the operation. On Thursday, I consulted with a surgeon - I was lucky, the head physician of the clinic, Otari Gogiberidze, undertook to operate. He also advised to do lipofilling of the lower ones together with blepharoplasty of the upper eyelids - that is, fill the hollows under the eyes with my own fat cells, as a result of which the gaps will decrease and the dark circles will brighten. Looking ahead: this manipulation really perfectly solved both problems, I now use concealer only in case of severe lack of sleep.

On the same day (remember, it was Thursday) I consulted with an anesthesiologist and chose local anesthesia. On Friday I did an ECG, passed a general urine test and blood tests: for blood group and Rh factor, for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, for blood clotting, as well as a clinical analysis. On Monday I sent the results to the clinic by mail, the doctors liked everything, and on Thursday at 10:00 I arrived for the operation. First, I filled out a sheaf of papers: personal data, information about past illnesses, consent to manipulations, to anesthesia, etc. Then I was invited to the ward, where I changed into disposable underwear and a dressing gown, underwent an express consultation with a surgeon, and at the same time received a soothing injection. The eyelids were marked with a marker. Then events developed rapidly: the operating table, treatment-disinfection,rubber pads under the skin in those places where it comes into contact with the table (the operation is performed not with an ordinary scalpel, but with an electric one), anesthesia. According to the allergy tests, I have a risk of an allergic reaction to lidocaine, so a different drug was selected for me individually, and an anesthesiologist was on duty in the operating room just in case.

Either thanks to a relaxation injection, or a positive attitude, I was not a bit afraid, but my arms and legs were involuntarily shaking - this is the autonomic nervous system trying, the surgeon explained. However, the trembling soon passed. During the operation, I was fully conscious, albeit in a slight fog, heard everything and even managed to maintain a conversation. Blepharoplasty works like this: with a scalpel, the surgeon makes a longitudinal incision in the center of the upper eyelid, excises excess skin pieces and then sutures. In this case, the threads are not used self-absorbing, but ordinary ones, so that no scars are guaranteed.

So, the sutures have been applied, the next step is lipofilling of the lower eyelids. Fat cells are taken from the inner thighs with a blunt cannula, then they are processed and cleaned, and then injected into the lower eyelid area. To be honest, when later in the photo I saw the size and thickness of the cannula, which was used to inject fat cells under the skin around the eyes, I felt uncomfortable. Although, in fact, there were no sensations, let alone unpleasant. Lipofilling, by the way, is also good because it is absolutely safe for allergy sufferers like me: my own adipose tissue, native, does not cause a negative reaction of the body and does not cause rejection. After the end of the lipofilling procedure, strips were applied to me around the eyes - very thin sterile plasters that are not afraid of water or touch and support the skin so that the puncture sites and seams do not disperse a hundredth of a millimeter.Thick bandage pads were applied to the puncture sites on the thighs.

Immediately after the operation, I walked to the ward with my own feet and went to bed. An hour and a half later, I woke up wildly hungry, the nurse brought me an afternoon snack (tea with lemon, still water, yogurt, cookies and something else delicious). I spent another couple of hours in bed, after which I received an extract and instructions from Otari Gogiberidze: to treat the upper part of my face with chlorhexidine, sleep on my back, and come to remove the stitches every other day. Then I got into the car and calmly steered home. What is most surprising is that neither on this day, nor on the following days, I did not experience any pain at all, and even after the anesthesia was gone, I did not take a single pill of anesthetic. After the experience, the eyes, of course, looked like slits, but cheerfully opened and closed - without the slightest effort and pain. Hematomas were also present, but I did not see them because of the plasters.

The next morning, my temperature slightly rose to 37.2 degrees, the swelling intensified, my eyes were difficult to open. The puncture sites on the thighs were bleeding for exactly 24 hours, so I did not take off the bandages. The sensations in the leg muscles were like after a long and fierce training - and so on for a couple of days. On the second day after the operation, when I went to the clinic to remove the stitches (the strips were left behind), I felt normal, the swelling of the eyelids noticeably decreased.

A few weeks after the operation, the fat cells pumped under the skin of the lower eyelids were finally distributed and took their rightful places. The seams have become even more invisible (now it is almost impossible to see them). And I boldly do my makeup, knowing that the arrows will not turn into dirty wavy lines, and mascara will not be imprinted on the upper eyelid. Needless to say, I don’t regret anything done - moreover, I think: “Why didn’t I decide on the operation earlier?”
