Choosing the right scent can take months or even years. But as soon as we find the smell that we like, we want to keep its suitability as long as possible. However, many do not know that each perfume has its own shelf life, but it can always be extended if a number of important conditions of use and storage are observed. Typical shelf life of fragrances
Most perfume manufacturers say perfumes have a shelf life of one to three years (always see the number on the packaging!). However, in some cases, the fragrance can be used for four or even five years. But on one condition: if you are well versed in the composition of the perfume and strictly follow the rules for its storage.
What else determines the shelf life of perfume
The composition of a perfume can affect its shelf life. Amandine Pallez, senior creative director at Bvlgari Parfums, told the American edition of Byrdie that the most short-lived are usually perfumes with citrus top notes. At the same time, woody and leather accords, on the contrary, help to extend the shelf life of the scent to more than three years. Now it is clear why many perfumers always add them to the composition!
Interestingly, most people now try to avoid alcohol in the composition. However, it plays a significant role in fragrances: the higher its content, the longer the shelf life of the perfume.
“If the fragrance does not contain alcohol, which acts as a preservative, its use cannot be very long (usually no more than a year),” warns Amandine Pallez. Eau de toilette or perfumery water with a shelf life of up to three years usually contains 80–96% alcohol.
Determining the spoilage of a perfume is very simple: usually its smell becomes different from when it was purchased, and the water in the bottle changes color, becomes cloudy. In this case, of course, the fragrance can no longer be used. But you can always extend its shelf life if you observe a number of important storage and use conditions.
Life hacks to help extend the shelf life of your favorite scent
1. Keep fragrances away from light
Placing perfume bottles next to a window might seem like a good idea for decor, but not for the quality of the scent. Sunlight can destroy the molecules of the scent, exposing it to oxidation. To prevent this, place your perfume in a closed cabinet.
2. Keep fragrances away from moisture and heat
A bathroom or a closet next to heaters is also not the best option for storing perfume. Otherwise, with moisture and high temperatures (above 15 degrees Celsius), they can change the chemical composition and deteriorate ahead of time.
3. Use the scent until it runs out
The less aroma is in a bottle, the more it is at risk of changing its concentration, especially if it has a low alcohol content. Advice: do not store half-empty perfume for a long time, and when you first open it, try to use it regularly. This rule may not sound very simple for those who like to change scents every day, but so important in order to extend the shelf life of a perfume.
