Scientists find new reasons for excess weight almost every month. One of the latter is the frequent change of time zones. How does this affect the amount of body fat? Stanford University School of Medicine scientists know the answer.
Scientists at Stanford University School of Medicine argue that frequent jet lag is the reason for the formation of "unhealthy" cholesterol. In support of their words, they published the results of research conducted under the direction of Dr. Mary Teruel.

The specialists placed the cells in Petri dishes and divided them into two groups. The first was exposed to the stress hormone for 48 hours, the second - for 12 hours with short interruptions. The results were quite unexpected. The first group of cells "overgrown" with adipose tissue, the second - not. Experts believe that this picture is associated with the activation of precursor cells responsible for converting nutrients into lipid tissue.
Mary Teruel says: "With the constant production of the stress hormone cortisol, the number of precursor cells increases tenfold, and therefore the number of fat cells also increases."
The growth rate of fat cells becomes even higher with late flights and constant night shift work. Again, this has to do with cortisol. When a person does not sleep at the right time, his level rises, disrupting the fat balance.
This is not the first study to show the relationship between circadian rhythms and excess weight. If you fall asleep on time and wake up on time, the risk of gaining a couple of extra pounds is reduced.
